The government has announced that the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPPA) will be signed in March. The trade agreement could see the elimination of tariffs in 11 countries, including New Zealand, Canada and Japan. However, many Māori groups are critical of the pact fearing it may diminish treaty rights. And as Irena Smith reports, one member of the coalition government, the Greens, also remains vehemently opposed to the deal.

Federation of Māori Authorities backs TPP signing

At least one Māori organisation has come out in support of New Zealand signing the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA). Federation of Māori Authorities chair Traci Houpapa says it’s critical NZ take its place at the TPP table alongside other major economies and that there would be significant benefits for Māori business. She also says that NZ is unique as it is the only TPP partner among the twelve countries to have recognised its indigenous peoples by enshrining the Treaty of Waitangi and exempting the WAI 262 claim.
